Pain Management
Pain comes in many forms, be it acute or chronic, but whatever the type it is very likely that it can be reduced through relaxation, calmness and and the realisation that it you who is in control of your pain, rather than the pain controlling you.
The mind/body connection is a complex one
and is still to be fully understood. Yet all of us have experienced,
at one time or another, how tension and stress can increase
our feelings of pain and discomfort whilst distraction, placebos
and techniques such as calm breathing can reduce them.
Our beliefs, our personalities, our coping
strategies all have a huge impact on the way that we as individuals
experience pain. Looking deeper into the relationship between
our mind and bodies we can also ask ourselves what purpose
pain serves for us? Why do we experience pain in particular
parts of our bodies? What are the upsides as well as the downsides
of pain?
Alleviating pain
At the Malvern Hypnotheraphy Clinic I run Pain Management sessions that will allow you to explore what role pain plays in your life and teach you strategies to control it, as well as increasing your feelings of relaxation, calmness and confidence.
Some conditions that can be helped:
- Chronic pain – pain management with self-hypnosis
- Hospital tests – coping with the day and waiting for results
- Dental appointments
- Dealing with a diagnosis of cancer
- Cancer care package – managing pain, discomfort and side effects during treatment
- Pre-operative preparation
- Post-operative recovery
However, I must stress that any Pain Management
session can only be conducted on referral from your doctor.
Pain protects us from further injury or
disease by alerting us that something is wrong, as well as
being a symptom. It would be unethical of me to help alleviate
chest pains, for instance, when the client is really suffering
from a heart condition and needs medical intervention.
For the same reason, the intention is not
to make pain disappear altogether, because of its function
as a warning, it is rather to reduce it to a level where it
is manageable.
The number of sessions required will depend
on the severity and/or circumstances of the pain suffered.
For example, if you want help to deal with the pain and distress
of a hospital test or an injection before you go on holiday,
then a single session of suggestion therapy will be very effective
in relieving anxiety and boosting your confidence in your
ability to cope with the situation.
If, however, the condition is chronic
a programme of weekly sessions will give you more pain relief
benefit over a longer period. Even if the medical condition
has been diagnosed as terminal hypnotherapy can reduce your
stress and discomfort, returning to you a sense of control
over your life.
