Social Anxiety

Take a moment to read these statements:

  1. I often find it hard to look people in the eye when I'm talking to them.
  2. I find parties and social events intimidating and often avoid them.
  3. I hate the feeling of being criticised, so I work really hard at being good and getting things right.
  4. I sometimes feel like a 'fraud' and that people will see through me.
  5. I avoid being the centre of attention.

If you agreed with one or more of these statements then that would indicate that you had some degree of social anxiety. If you agreed with all of them then it's very likely social anxiety is causing considerable stress in your life.

Other indicators of social anxiety are:-

  • Fear of authority
  • Anxiety about making phone calls
  • Shy bladder (paruresis) / Shy bowel (parcopresis)
Forms of toilet phobia which stop the sufferer using a toilet whilst other people are around.
  • Fear of eating around other people
  • Performance anxiety e.g. giving presentations, exams, interviews.
  • Blushing or fear of blushing
  • Stuttering or stammering
  • Fear of being humiliated or being 'shown up'
  • Performance anxiety in relation to sex e.g premature ejaculation or impotence
